ATEX three-phase motors

The determination of which areas, whether outdoors or indoors, are to be considered potentially explosive within the meaning of the relevant regulations or provisions must be left exclusively to the operator or, if there is any doubt about the designation of potentially explosive areas, to the competent supervisory authority. This is governed by Directive 99/92/EC ATEX 137 (formerly ATEX 118a).

For explosion-proof products, Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) is the relevant quality standard. This directive specifies the requirements for products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Electrical machines for use in Zone 1, 2, or
21, 22 can be implemented in various types of ignition protection, the aim of each of these types of ignition protection being the safe prevention of ignition of any potentially explosive atmosphere present at the place of use of the electrical machine.

Type of ignition protection: Flameproof enclosure “d”

Building regulation: EN 60079-1:2007 (VDE 0170-5) Definition:
A type of ignition protection in which the parts that can ignite an explosive atmosphere are arranged in a housing which, in the event of an explosion of an explosive mixture inside, can withstand the pressure of that mixture and prevents the explosion from being transmitted to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the housing.

• Consideration of the explosion group
• Pressure-resistant housing
• Compliance with the required gap widths and lengths
• Terminal box pressure-resistant encapsulation “d” or, for increased safety, “e”
• The temperature of the outer surface must be lower than the ignition temperature of the gases present in the environment.
• An explosion may occur inside, the casing must withstand this pressure, and no flame or ignitable, hot gases may escape through any gaps.
