3.1.24 When is an EMC filter required for a frequency converter?
An EMC filter is required in a frequency converter when electromagnetic interference must be reduced and legal EMC requirements must be met.
An EMC filter is required if:
-
Interference with other devices, e.g. PLCs, sensors, IT or measuring systems
-
Legal EMC guidelines (e.g. EN 61800-3) must be complied with.
-
Long motor cables are used
-
The inverter is operated in residential, office or sensitive industrial environments.
-
Several frequency converters operating close together
In short:
An EMC filter ensures that high-frequency interference from the frequency converter is not transmitted into the power grid or to other devices.
