Electric motors – spring-applied brakes

How the electric motor brake works

Spring-applied brakes are predominantly used in these applications. These operate on the quiescent current principle. This means that the braking effect is generated in the absence of current by means of an integrated spring assembly. The electrically generated magnetic field attracts the armature disk across an air gap against the spring force, releasing the drive shaft to rotate.

Dual spring-applied brakes

Dual brakes are used where high safety standards are required. These two independently operating spring-applied brakes are ideally suited for use in elevators and stage technology due to their special noise reduction features.

DC brakes

The K-series electromechanical spring-applied brake is a DC brake . Its purpose is to stop the rotational movement of a mechanical shaft.
The main features of the K-series brake are:
• Extremely robust structure
• Extremely quiet intervention and operation (< 70 dBA according to Directive 98/37/EEC)
• Cost-effectiveness thanks to the simple assembly of the brake group
• Good heat dissipation. This is achieved via the fan and/or the motor cover, which must be made of cast iron or steel, as it also serves as a braking surface.
• The coil of the electromagnet is completely bonded with epoxy resin, and the mechanical parts are protected by a galvanic zinc coating.


AC brakes

The electromechanical spring-applied brake of the AC series is an AC brake . Its purpose is to stop the rotational movement of a mechanical shaft. Correct operation of the brake is only guaranteed by observing the instructions on the "Dimensional Calculations" page.
The main features of the AC series brake are:
• Extremely robust construction
• Easy assembly of the brake unit
• Quiet operation (< 70 dBA according to Directive 98/37/EEC)
• Good heat dissipation thanks to the die-cast aluminum structure and the electric motor's fan.
• The coil of the electromagnet is completely bonded with epoxy resin.
